Padel Hydration: The Complete Guide for Players

Padel Hydration: The Complete Guide for Players

By Danielle McCabe

Padel looks gentle from the balcony. On court it's 60 to 90 minutes of short sprints, sudden stops, lunges to the glass and long rallies, often under bright indoor lights or in a warm summer cage. You sweat more than you think, and when you lose too much fluid, the first things to slip are the things padel relies on most: your timing, your decisions and your legs in the third set.

This guide covers what to drink before, during and after a match, why electrolytes help players at every level, and how to plan for a full tournament day.

Why hydration matters in padel

Padel is an intermittent sport. Points last a few seconds to a minute, then you get a short break, then you go again. That stop-start pattern, plus enclosed courts that trap heat, means many players sweat steadily for the whole match without noticing.

Sweat is mostly water, but it also carries electrolytes, mainly sodium, with smaller amounts of potassium and magnesium. Everyone sweats at a different rate and with a different saltiness, which is why two players in the same match can need very different amounts.

Common early signs that you're getting dehydrated include feeling thirsty, a dry mouth, headaches, feeling tired and dark yellow urine (NHS: dehydration). On court, players often notice it first as heavy legs and lapses in concentration.

Before you play

Start the match already hydrated rather than trying to catch up on court.

  • Drink normally through the day and have a glass or two of water in the couple of hours before you play.
  • Check your urine colour: pale straw is a good sign.
  • Many players, whatever their level, have an electrolyte drink before they warm up. Mix one Vibora Hydrate sachet into 500ml of water and sip it as you get ready.
  • Avoid downing a large volume just before you go on court. Sloshing around at the net helps nobody.

During the match

The change of ends is your hydration window. Use it every time, even when you don't feel thirsty.

  • Take a few mouthfuls at each change of ends rather than a lot at once.
  • Electrolytes aren't just for advanced players. Whatever your level, you lose sodium when you sweat, so adding electrolytes to your bottle is a simple habit for every session.
  • They matter even more for matches over an hour, hot or humid courts, or if you finish with salt marks on your kit.
  • Keep two bottles if you can: one plain water, one electrolyte drink.

Want a number to aim for? Work out your own sweat rate: weigh yourself in minimal clothing before a typical match and again after, and add the weight of anything you drank. Each kilogram lost is roughly a litre of sweat. Do it a few times and you'll know how much you typically lose per hour. Our full guide to how much to drink during a padel match walks through it.

After the match

  • Keep drinking over the next hour or two, particularly if you lost a lot of weight during play or you're playing again soon.
  • Have a meal or snack that includes some salt and carbohydrate; food replaces electrolytes too.
  • If you're back on court tomorrow, rehydrating tonight matters more than anything you drink at the start of the next match.

Water, sports drinks or electrolytes?

Option Best for Watch out for
Plain water The base of every player's hydration Doesn't replace the sodium you sweat out
Bottled vitamin drink Grab-and-go convenience Often contains added sugar, so extra calories, and usually few electrolytes
Tub of electrolyte powder Good value at home Bulky to carry and measure out at the club
Sugary sports drink Long sessions where you also want carbohydrate Sugar content if you drink it at every game
Single-serve electrolyte sachet Players at every level; easy to carry and mix fresh Check sodium per serving and sweeteners

The right choice depends on how long and hard you play. We compare them in detail in Sports Drinks vs Electrolytes: What's Best for Padel? and in our guide to choosing the best electrolytes for padel.

Tournament days

Tournaments are where hydration plans pay off. You might play three or four matches with short breaks, often in different temperatures as the day goes on.

  • Pack more drink than you think you'll need, and single-serve sachets so you can mix fresh bottles between matches.
  • Sip between matches, not just during them.
  • Eat small, easily digested snacks between games. See what to eat before a padel match.
  • Our tournament hydration guide has a full match-by-match plan.

Hot weather and indoor courts

Summer cages and busy indoor clubs both push sweat rates up. Drink earlier, take every change of ends, and lean on electrolytes for anything longer than an hour. Read more in Summer Padel Hydration.

Padel hydration FAQs

Is water enough for padel?

Water is the foundation, but it doesn't replace the sodium you lose in sweat. Adding electrolytes helps players of every level, especially in long, hot or competitive sessions.

Should I drink electrolytes every time I play?

On playing days, an electrolyte drink is an easy part of your routine at any level. On rest days most people get enough sodium from food. Always follow the dose on the pack.

When should I drink electrolytes for padel?

Before and during longer matches, and between matches on tournament days.
